Recycled materials

At espoo. we care about sustainable and thoughtful consuming. As design and sustainability have become more and more inseparable, many of our brands have reworked their production process, shifted their focus to the development of long-lasting products, and started using more sustainable materials. In this blogpost we highlight the use of recycled materials.

The Bit stool by Normann Copenhagen has won the award for best outdoor product "Best Of Year, Interior Design Magazine, 2021". The stool is made up of small bits of 100% recycled household and industrial plastic and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. It comes in a variety of different colours and shapes. Use Bit as a pedestal for a floral arrangement, as a side table for a lamp, or as impromptu seating for that unexpected dinner guest.

The fabrics in the ferm Living Desert collection are made from 100% PET yarn made from recycled post-consumer plastic. The seat of the Desert stool corresponds to 17 one-litre plastic bottles, and the Desert lounge chair to 53 plastic bottles. Both designs are suitable for outdoor use.

The Revolt chair, a design by Friso Kramer, has been reinvented with sustainability in mind. The seat is now a mix of recycled post-consumer and virgin ABS material in different colour options. The steel sheet of its legs and frame allows HAY to cut down on quantity of material used, thereby creating less waste. Revolt's comfort, durability and timeless aesthetics make it suitable for using in a wide variety of private, corporate or public spaces.

The Sketch toolbox from Muuto is manufactured in Denmark using a minimum of 91% recycled plastic. Designer Thomas Bentzen explains his design philosophy as: "I like to create objects that are functional and simple, while satisfying a human need when in use and creating joy when idle. For me, durability means quality, form, and functionality and putting an immense amount of energy into making virtues out of necessities."
The ferm Living Liba watering can is made up of 100% recycled HDPE made from recycled post-consumer plastic. At ferm Living 28% of the products are made from sustainable or recycled materials. These include organic, FSC™-certified wallpaper and wooden furniture; GOTS-certified cotton; textiles made entirely from recycled, post-consumer plastic bottles turned into PET-yarn; recycled paper pulp; and recycled aluminium.
