Although most design lovers know Muller Van Severen for their furniture, the story of the Belgian design duo actually began with the conception of the Hanging Lamps. The idea was born out of necessity. Hannes explains: “We were working in our new home, an old house, and there was no ceiling socket above the table to plug in a light source. So we designed a lamp that could hang from the wall.”
The first prototypes were shown at Muller Van Severen’s debut solo exhibition in 2011. During this exhibition, Fien and Hannes filled the Valerie Traan Gallery of Veerle Wenes with designs that looked as if someone had taken a box of crayons and started drawing in the air. This is precisely how these lamps should be seen: seemingly naive drawings turned into real, tangible objects.
Like all of Muller Van Severen’s creations, the Hanging Lamps combine sobriety with color and character. They trace a delicate, colorful line through the interior — ending with a simple lightbulb and a lampshade the couple originally found at a flea market. A perfectly neutral shade for a timeless and poetic design.
